U S infantrymen trailed a Viet Cong force through rain slick paddies in the Mekong Delta and mauled it. The 9th Division reported 30 Viet Cong killed, with 3 U S soldiers wounded. Flare ships and helicopter gunships lit the night battlefield 45 miles southwest of Saigon. Earlier, 9th Division units killed 22 Viet Cong with six U S deaths and nine wounded. Allied reports also noted major clashes near Dak To and Xuan Loc with heavy enemy losses and mixed South Vietnamese casualties.
London AP report says oil slick, waterlogged life raft and black metal panels from a hijacked C130 indicate the plane and U.S. Air Force sergeant Paul Meyer likely perished at sea off Alderney in the Channel Islands. Meyer, 23, from Poquoson Virginia, had taken the Hercules aircraft after a drink spree and radioed his wife before vanishing.

Washington indicated no expected break in relations despite ongoing tensions over fishing boat seizures and Lima’s seizure of U.S. oil holdings. Rockefeller had been on a fact-finding tour of Latin America.
Peru’s military government indicated this week that a Rockefeller visit by President Nixon would be unwelcome and called for U S military missions to leave. It accused the United States of violating an arms agreement by halting arms sales to Peru.
