Washington May 20 The administrations shipping bill designed to upbuild the merchant marine and strengthen the navy passed the House by 211 to 161. The measure moved to the Senate in virtually its original form.

Record Flight From Newport News To Sheepshead Bay

Victor Charles Trom flew a 160 horsepower biplane 146 miles from Newport News Virginia to Sheepshead Bay speedway in four hours and one minute setting a distance record for the Aero Club of America. Charlestrom was lost in a thunderstorm at 5000 feet while Stevenson MacGrordon arrived one hour later in another biplane.

London May 20 The American embassy was informed that the sentence of Jeremiah C Lynch an naturalized American citizen convicted of conspiracy in the Sinn Fein rebellion will be announced by authorities later today.

Three German Seaplanes Raid English East Coast

London reports three German seaplanes raided the English east coast last night. One aircraft was captured off the Belgian coast. The raid dropped 37 bombs, killing one soldier and wounding two civilians.

Norfolk Virginia May 20 Special Officer Lankford Sanderlin was killed and Special Officer William West fatally shot at Lambert's Point coal piers of the Norfolk and Western railway during a riot over theft of rape, as laborers clashed with railroad workers. The Argyle shows will operate in High Point next week under fire department sponsorship. The carnival will set up on North Main street and run from Monday afternoon to Saturday night. After prior denial, officials permitted the event, hoping to raise a tidy sum for the fire department.

Kinston May 20 The annual council of the Episcopal diocese of East Carolina met here for a four day session led by Bishop Thomas C. Darst. Barn Fire Destroys I A Morris’s Place on Ray Street

A barn on I A Morriss property on Ray Street burned last night with a horse killed and about 300 bales of hay and straw set aflame. Loss estimated at 3060 to 490 with no insurance. Fire started around 10 30 p m and likely due to an electric wire. The barn and contents including harness wagons were destroyed.
