RALEIGH AP A Mecklenburg legislator introduced a statewide liquor bill seeking a statewide vote on wet or dry status. Rep. Jack Baugh said the bill would place a vote at the next general election in fall 1970, proposing two options for voters.
RALEIGH AP The North Carolina House approved by 72 to 37 Gov Bob Scott s proposed two cent gasoline tax and sent it toward enactment as lawmakers focus on eight other tax measures in the governor s package Two Republican opponents argued against the bill noting highway contractors drive the call for higher gas taxes The package includes a five cent cigarette tax and a two cent cigar tax with cigarette taxes projected at 50 million over the next biennium and the cigar tax at seven million Other measures include liquor tax up 19 percent beer tax up 1 5 cents per bottle motor vehicle and related sales tax up to 2 percent liquor and tobacco adjustments and insurance premium hikes plus bank and building loan association tax changes.
