The Enterprise reports a new olympic sized pool on Guyer Street with 300 family capacity, managed by Coach Vic Sanniota. Initiation is $350 until May 15 rising to $375, annual dues $50, no time payments. Membership area unrestricted. applications reviewed by a board.
A reader from a Christian camp near Miller's Pond appeals to the thief who stole camp equipment used by boys. Director Herb Kennedy, who works with youths, asks the offender to return the items or contact him at 431-1259 through Mrs. B.C.
The North Carolina House voted 70 to 39 to approve Gov. Bob Scott’s two cent gasoline tax hike, with a 68 to 43 vote defeating a one cent amendment. The measure, with license plate fees rising eight dollars, targets the State Highway Fund and is set for final House action Thursday.
Charles Evers, a Negro civil rights leader, elected mayor of Fayette, Mississippi. He won 386 votes to 225 for incumbent R G Allen in the town of 1600, becoming the first Black mayor in southwest Mississippi since 1875. Eleven Negroes won town board seats and 11 more forced runoffs with white opponents. In Jersey City, Mayor Thomas Whelan led but did not secure a majority.
President Nixon will speak at 1 p.m. EST in a cautious, optimistic tone about peace prospects in Vietnam. White House aides say the speech will outline current status in light of the Viet Cong 10 point proposal, emphasize mutual troop withdrawal, and avoid pledges of unilateral U.S. troop reductions. Ambassador Lodge will get new instructions before Paris talks and attend a Cabinet NSC meeting to review the administration’s position.
Secretary of State William P. Rogers lands in South Vietnam for four days of talks and inspections. He stresses the United States will not compromise on its objective: a settlement allowing the people of South Vietnam to determine their future without outside imposition. He cites President Nixon’s forthcoming peace prospects and signals openness to broaden Thieu’s political base, while opposing a forced coalition with the Communists.
A leading House Republican Rep Clark MacGregor urged an informal Judiciary Committee investigation to determine if impeachment steps are warranted. He said the attorney general would cooperate, as Fortas faces mounting pressure amid fee controversy and calls to quit. Fortas contemplates his future amid secret strategy meetings and public scrutiny.
Washington AP reports a crash immunization plan to shield eight million people from German measles this winter. Dr. David J. Sencer seeks 9.6 million dollars from Congress to immunize 30 to 40 million children, focusing on young women of child bearing age. The program starts this summer. vaccine ready by June 30 with an estimated immunity of 20 years.
The Senate backs Nixon draft lottery plan while leaders split. Majority Leader Mansfield says it’s a step but opposes it for not fixing all inequities. Edward Kennedy supports the reforms. Hatfield criticizes the plan as not nearing war policy solution. House may resist due to existing lottery ban.
