Washington officials outlined plans to seek foreign assistance if astronaut Gordon Cooper lands in China during his upcoming space flight. Recovery teams would position at the boundary and await entry permission if Cooper lands in a Communist country.
The Supreme Court unanimously overturns jail sentences given to three Negroes who refused to move from the white section of a courtroom in East Baton Rouge Parish Louisiana on November 29 1962. The decision cites a Richmond Virginia case that bans courtroom segregation. Contempt sentences were handed by Judge Fred S LeBlanc in the 19th Judicial District Court.
Haitian exiles Louis Dejoie and Daniel Fignole announced a provisional government from Puerto Rico claiming to represent 80 percent of Haitian voters and predicting Duvalier’s dictatorship will fall within weeks. They seek quick recognition from the United States and other nations.
The court ruled that railroad workers cannot be forced to fund political spending through union dues. Justice Brennan announced the decision affecting about 30 North Carolina Southern Railway employees, with Justice Harlan dissenting in part and Justice Goldberg recusing. The ruling sends the case back to the North Carolina Supreme Court to determine political expenditures and the share of dues used politically, and to shape refunds and future union practices.
Union Pacific, Chicago Rock Island and Pacific announce a planned merger after an eight month study. Rock Island to sell lines south and southwest of Kansas City to Southern Pacific. Exchange offered is 0.718 Union Pacific share for each Rock Island share. Board and stockholder approvals to follow. Tax implications described as tax free.
Riots in Birmingham prompted President Kennedy to move riot trained Army units into Alabama with警 federal troops stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base and Fort McClellan. King urged restraint while Malcolm Wallace, mayor Boutwell and Negro leaders appealed for calm. The Gaston Motel bombing sparked the latest violence as efforts for desegregation continued.
President Kennedy plans a Saturday flight to northern Alabama as federal troops move into the Birmingham area to curb racial violence.
