Carrick Cleared by Pardon to Take City Council Seat

Virgil P. Carrick won a full pardon from Gov. Terry Sanford for a 1938 armed robbery conviction. The pardon restores his citizenship and allows the Republican councilman-elect to be sworn in Tuesday amid support from both parties and local leaders.

Copilot Dies After In-Flight Emergency Aboard Varig Jet

On Varig Airlines Flight 654 from Buenos Aires to New York a medical emergency aboard the high speed jet ended in the death of co pilot Geraldo Segala 29. A Brazilian doctor aboard helped perform an on board external heart massage and attempted resuscitation with blankets shielding passengers. Capt. Ferucio Carboni alerted New York for an ambulance as crew members continued chest massage during the landing.

Pro-Nasser Federation Threatened by Syrian Iraqi Shakeup

In Damascus and Baghdad leaders moved toward Arab unity under President Nasser after a Cairo federation plan. Syria's National Revolutionary Council accepted Prime Minister Salah Bitar’s resignation and eyed Sami Jundi as new premier while Iraq’s Bakr said the cabinet would pursue the Cairo pact and the tripartite federation.

Wallace Scoffs At Proposals In Birmingham Crisis

In Birmingham the quiet followed a six week racial crisis as Negro leaders prepared a voter registration drive while 575 patrolmen and other officers kept order. Gov. George Wallace dismissed the truce as a sham, calling it a so called truce, and said law enforcement forced the pause. Police Commissioner Eugene Connor condemned the agreement as a false face saving statement and noted he would not stop integration efforts by businessmen.

Raleigh Leader Pledges Further Action

Large groups of Negro students staged anti segregation demonstrations in downtown Raleigh Saturday night outside the Sir Walter Coffee Shop the State Theatre The Ambassador Theatre and the S W Cafeteria No arrests were reported or violence seen Charles Earle Shaw University student body president said a negotiated committee is not enough and called for immediate action The demonstrations were orderly with picketing marching and singing and will continue Monday with further steps.

Target of Coulee Crest to shoot back soon

Pvt. Daniel J. Arthur 17 from Los Angeles endured 10 hours under live fire in Exercise Crest at Coulee Crest Washington. After miscounts left him isolated, he slept through firing but kept his bravery. He was evacuated to Madigan Army Hospital and hopes to rejoin live firing next week.

Mrs Miller completes solo Pacific flight record

Betty Miller, 37, left Suva Fiji at 1 47 p m EST to Brisbane Australia on the final leg of her solo transpacific trip. Flying a twin engine Piper Apache she expects a 12 hour 25 minute 1 400 mile leg. She earlier became the first woman to fly solo from the mainland to Hawaii.
