Dispatches report 1500 Carranza soldiers advancing toward the Big Ben district in Coahuila. Officials suspect the move aims to capture bandits raiding border towns. Administrations expect cooperation between American and Mexican forces along the border to curb raids.
Saratoga N Y May 13 The Methodist General Conference votes 447 to 280 to drop the recommendation that favors union labor in all matters affecting employers while protecting the rights of non organized workers. The reform follows the committee on social service report as read.
In Durham on May 13 a settlement was reached in the alienation suit of Mrs. Virginia Kendall of Richmond against Mrs. Bettie Hunt Carr wife of a local dentist. The amount settled unofficially is $1100. Attorneys refused to comment. Kendall sought $20000 for the alienation of her husband Richard Kendall a jewelry salesman. Dr. George A. Carr husband of the defendant is plaintiff in a divorce suit against Mrs. Carr.
Samuel S. M durable, arriving from Copenhagen, reports peace sentiment exists only in Germany and Austria. He says belligerents show confidence in victory and aim to resume commerce, while Germans and Austrians prefer peace for business reasons. Other nations he visited expect continued fighting.
Madrid May 13 The general strike on all Spanish railroads planned for May 20 has been called off as the points in dispute were settled through concessions by the employers.
A dispatch from Pranda Spain reports a revolution in Lisbon with troops moving and arsenals burned as unrest erupts in the Portuguese capital.
The regular army will be 206000 strong in peace with expansion to 254000 in war. Senate plan kept as substitute for house system. maximum under house plan would be 140000. Regular line set between 160000 and 175006 officers and men in peace. Congress to ratify via next week report.
The Associated Press reports New York marked Preparedness Day with a massive 145000 strong procession across streets twenty abreast. The parade, aimed at war readiness, began May 13 and could run 12 hours or more as business districts closed and an estimated one million witnessed the event. Demand for parade space surpassed capacity, forcing many applicants to be turned away.

Opening bids for aeroplane mail service on seven Alaska routes and one in Massachusetts yielded a single bidder, D L Brors of Idtarod Alaska, to operate Seward to Iditarod 38 miles for 45500 dollars for a year. The Post Office will consider acceptance amid contract questions and a likely later bid round. Overland Alaska costs exceed 100000 a year on many routes, while Seward Iditarod runs 22865 and New Bedford Nantucket costs amount to 23000 annually.
Secretary Baker says no advice confirms Governor Goethals plans to resign June 1. Goethals has a tacit agreement with the War Department to retire after canal slide removals, a retirement he postponed after slides last fall.
Beeson Hardware Company owner Jeeson R. RK. Ragan was fined 100 dollars by Judge Dalton for repairing a frame building without a permit. The structure must be torn down within 80 days or the firm must pay the penalty. Fire limits law prevented permit issuance and the company planned a brick replacement within six months.
The census bureau reports April cotton use at 531,716 running bales excluding Hunters, with nine month total 4,760,706 bales. April 30 consuming establishments hold 2,006,512 bales and public storage 2,814,897. active spindles total 2,113,841 versus year ago 30,903,509.
Concord May 13 The North Carolina Lutheran Synod conducted a routine session focusing on reports from the executive committee and committees on apportionment and missions. A memorial was offered to the late Dr RK Holland and an afternoon trip was planned to the Jackson Training School.
Rev A G Dixon who has been away about a month writes he does not expect to return until about June 1. He will attend the General Conference of the Methodist Protestant church before returning to High Point. Rev O B Williams from Graham will occupy Dixon's pulpit tomorrow and stay at Captain A M Rankin's home during his visit.
Washington May 15 The weather bureau forecasts cool and cloudy weather across the Atlantic states starting tomorrow while gulf states expect normal temperatures. The outlook emphasizes a cooler pattern with cloudiness across several regions.
President Wilson left yesterday afternoon for a weekend outing aboard the Mayflower on the Potomac. He expects to return to Washington late Sunday night or early Monday morning.
About 250 weavers and spinners in the Laurel cotton mill walked off the job on May 1 to demand more fresh air. They claim the mill windows were nailed shut leaving only an eight inch opening for ventilation.
T. J. Wendall of New York told a house committee that with an adequate national stadium the 1920 Olympic games could be held in America. He supported Representative Hulbert's bill for constructing a 1,500,000 dollar stadium in Washington.

J S Davis died at his residence 110 Clay Street last night after a lingering tuberculosis illness. He was 62 years 11 months and 27 days old and was born in Forsythe county. He is survived by two sons and two daughters. Funeral services will be Sunday afternoon from the residence conducted by Rev J M Hilliard of Green Street Baptist Church, with interment at Oakwood Cemetery.
A city message states J Elwood Cox will not return today as expected due to his appointment to an important committee. He is likely to be away until the end of the week.
Chicago May 13 A summary of top hitters and pitchers from the American and National Leagues. Notable figures include Dave Robertson of New York leading NL batters with 437, Burns and Hinchmann high in NL averages, and Leonard Coombs Pennock among leading pitchers. In AL figures, Smith Cleveland leads with .388, Fournier Chicago tops homers with three, Speaker and Felsh pace runs with 17, and Judge Washington blocks steals with eight.
