Lt. R. F. Tyler testified before a commerce board that the first blaze on the Hindenburg likely came from an internal explosion in the hull rather than a spark from ground lines. He described a small flame about ten by five feet and a loud initial report near the port fin.
A massive steam shovel starts excavation at the North Hamilton street crossing as the Southern Railway project to eliminate grade crossings moves forward. Blythe Brothers of Charlotte handle the dig with two shovels, planning 24 hour work to rebuild tracks on the north side. City officials, including City Manager E. M. Knox, oversee final details as dirt dumps for track bedding.
The ceremony in Westminster Abbey marked the start of George VI reign as he pledged to rule justly before 7,500 peers and diplomats while outside a million cheering Britons filled the streets. Guns sounded from the Tower of London as the St Edward's crown was placed on his head. Queen Elizabeth, born in Scotland, was anointed and present at the rite.

Mrs Taft W Fogleman 31 was held here in connection with the February 6 slaying of her husband Sheriff C V Faulkner said the case will go to the grand jury May 24. She was arrested in Sanford after neighbor Melvin Coggins 43 altered his story while on death row for his role. Coggins told Faulkner the woman bore blame. she denied knowledge of the crime.
The Duke of Windsor and Wallis Warfield will delay their wedding to early June due to differences between the royal family and the British government. The pair were attending King George VI’s coronation when the postponement was announced, with the couple seen leaving the Chateau de Candé retreat.

The highway and public works commission divides the state into ten administrative divisions for road work, with each division led by engineers and district engineers. The move adds personnel and reorganizes duties, extending the state’s current five divisions into more localized districts. The listed first two districts include Dare, Currituck, Camden, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Chowan, Gates, Hertford, Bertie, Martin, Edgcombe, Halifax, Northampton and Warren, with a second group including Tyrrell, Washington, Hyde, Beaufort, Pitt and Greene.
Cadet Sergeant James B. Spedden of Winston-Salem N C held first honors in the small bore rifle competition at The Citadel. The five day contest completed yesterday saw Company G win the Washington light infantry trophy.
Two Roosevelt court bill opponents urged Ambassador William E. Dodd to return from Berlin after his letter to Senators Glass and Bulkley urging support of the reform. Senator Van Nuys said the envoy overstepped his official role, calling the letter ill-timed and unsolicited. He warned he may seek the ambassador's recall to testify before a Senate committee if such charges continue.

Mrs. Alice Roosevelt Longworth, widow of Nicholas Longworth, was photographed handling a six foot king snake during a Cincinnati visit. She called the incident nothing special, recalling childhood pets and snakes around the house as onlookers gasped and laughed.
C EB Stevenson vice president of the Cannon Manufacturing company and head of the local plant died at his Salisbury home last night. Funeral set for tomorrow. Survived by his widow a daughter Mrs Robert Hunter of Salisbury and a brother Junius L Stevenson of Loray.

New York May 12 ledgers for 1929 and 1930 belonging to Pierre 8 du Pohst were admitted as evidence in the income tax case against Du Pont and his former secretary John J Raskob. Government seeks to recover 617316 from Du Pont and 1026340 from Raskob in alleged deficiency taxes. Ledgers were introduced by Mason B Leming chief government counsel.
Nearly 4,000 ballots were cast in an uncontested municipal election in Asheville. All seven city council members were reelected as the terms were renewed without opposition.
The drive between Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp and the John L. Lewis committee escalated today with union workers at Aliquippa and Pittsburgh plants ready to strike at 11 pm if no collective bargaining contract is signed. Philip Murray, head of the steel workers committee, met J L executives in a bid to avert a walkout, seeking a wage and hour agreement similar to a deal with United States Steel and 100 independents.
