Taft and Eisenhower show strength in several states with the AP tally placing Taft over 400 delegates and Eisenhower at 290 with four added votes. The report notes 86 delegates named and 158 more to be chosen next week as seven states and Hawaii select representatives for the July 7 Chicago convention.
A Paris newspaper attributes a leaked war report to Fleet Admiral William Fechteler and cites his alleged neutralist stance. U S Minister Karl L Rankin told The Associated Press Formosa can be held against a Communist assault and praised improved economic and military positions since 1950 He said Formosa is well governed and expects the mainland to be liberated someday by continued American support The people of China will welcome liberation from communism and sovereignty restoration.

Judge Felix E. Alley and D. Hiden Ramsey will receive honorary doctorate degrees from Western Carolina Teachers College at the May commencement. President Paul A. Reid announced the first honorary degrees in the college’s history.

About 350 teachers from across North Carolina gathered at the University of North Carolina for the annual North Carolina Association for Childhood Education meeting. Dr. Thelma Gwinn Thurstone of Chicago public schools spoke, and Dr. I G Greer UNC executive secretary also addressed sessions.
In Columbus County Superior Court three Klansmen were found guilty of assault in the December abduction of a Whiteville auto mechanic. Two others were acquitted on all charges. Sentences ranged from two years on the roads to suspended payments and court costs. several defendants faced appeals.
The Korean truce talks on Koje Island and Panmunjom stay stalled as Communist and Allied delegates clash over prisoner issues and a neutral supervisor. Brig. Gen. Francis T. The 11 day national oil walkout harms air service as Eastern and United trim flights. Officials warn the strike could force widespread gasoline shortages, with five percent reserved for emergencies and several cities reporting shortages.
Winds of hurricane force tore through the Piedmont Carolinas killing at least two people Curtis Luke a 17 year old farm boy in Inman South Carolina and John Miller in Spartanburg County when a tree fell on his auto. The storm felled trees toppled roofs shattered windows and disrupted power across eight counties with thousands left without service and damage to farms homes and businesses.
UPI report from Washington on May 10 notes Senators Hill and Sparkman endorsed Sen. Richard Russell for the Democratic presidential nomination. They praised him as a tested leader uniting the party and preserving New Deal gains, while highlighting Russell’s role in maintaining party unity and resisting southern defection.
With three weeks to go before voting, gubernatorial candidates Hubert E. Olive and William B. Umstead plan intensified campaigning. Umstead schedules two speeches and broad handshake tours in Piedmont and Eastern North Carolina, while Olive concentrates in the Piedmont and western counties.

W. P. Whitley, chief of Apex police, killed Thomas and Gorey Mitchell of Bunn Level Route 1 in a confrontation. Both men were found dead, one clutching a knife as the chief was also wounded and rushed to a hospital with knife injuries.
Western Allies again faced a puzzling move by Soviet troops at the Berlin frontier as patrols were blocked from entering the Autobahn from the eastern side. U S British and French commanders summoned General Vasily Chuikov to address the incident amid lingering tension days before the blockade’s third anniversary.
The Truman steel seizure case reaches the Supreme Court with the government arguing broad executive powers under the Constitution to solve the emergency. The CIO steelworkers challenge the action as illegal and unconstitutional while the industry seeks reversal of Judge Pine's ruling and return of mills to private ownership.
