Brig. Gen. Francis T. Dodd was freed after four days as hostages on Koje Island. He was released unharmed at 9:30 p.m. Korea time and flown to 8th Army headquarters in Seoul to tell reporters his story. The Army did not disclose concessions granted to secure his release amid 6 000 plus inmates in Compound 76. The bond with UN troops and leaders of the prisoners culminated in a tense day of negotiations and warnings of force if needed.
An artillery supported Allied patrol battled Chinese forces on the Korean Western Front, engaging about 1000 combatants near Panmunjom. The pursuit forced a retreat as Fifth Air Force reports 13 Communist aircraft shot down and 10 planes lost in combat.
