In Elizabeth City on Tuesday afternoon a sailboat capsized in the Pasquotank River. Two coast guardsmen and a motor lifeboat rescued five people including three boys who clung to the hull for about half an hour in cold water after the vessel overturned at 5 10 pm following a call from an unidentified observer.

Washington May 11 Republicans attacked the administration credit and lending program calling it a threat to national solvency. They cited a minority report by Taber Bacon and Wigglesworth labeling current business conditions a Roosevelt low mood. Democrat Maverick of Texas dismissed the criticism and said critics have no program of their own.
The White House said President Roosevelt cannot settle the helium export dispute with Germany over a contract for the LZ 130 dirigible. Secretary Ickes opposed the sale without guarantees against military use, with six cabinet members needing unanimous consent. The president discussed the issue with Ickes and top officials including General Malin Craig Admiral Leahy and Solicitor General Jackson.
Mrs Marie Little 36 is recuperating from a gunshot head wound and a neck slash after an attack by Julius L Little her former husband in Greensboro He then tried to slash his wrist and was jailed on a charge of assault with deadly weapon The two were at St Leo s hospital under guard and Mrs Little had returned from Florida where she sought a divorce The attack occurred at the E J DuPont de Nemours office in Greensboro
A high administration source says President Roosevelt planned to appoint John W. Hanes of Winston-Salem and Washington as assistant secretary of the Treasury. Hanes, a former Wall Street broker and current Securities commissioner, would only say he contemplates no change. He was to discuss the possible appointment at the White House today.
Chinese reports say 4000 houses were damaged and 300 civilians killed or wounded in Suchow during a heavy air attack on the city defending the Shanghai railway. Over 300 bombs dropped, fires raged, and Japanese forces claimed ignition of military stores.
In Toledo Ohio on March 11 the CIO United Automobile Workers picketed the Willys-Overland plant for an hour to bar dues delinquent and unaffiliated workers. The pickets withdrew on orders from UAW official Homer Avery and the company reported a full workforce of 1000.
In Chicago a five week old infant, Helaine Colan, recovers after surgery to remove her left eye to halt retinal glioma. Doctors report she is doing well and resting quietly, with a good chance of preserving vision in the right eye. Four other glioma cases are also being studied locally.
In New York May 11 the Brazilian fascist revolt, though denied as quelled by the Vargas government, caused a drop in Brazilian bonds and stocks. Brazil 6s and San Paulo/ Brazil 8s fell about $10 to $20 per $1,000. London trading paused briefly before resuming with similar declines.
The local government commission sold 150000 Guilford road refunding bonds to Halsey Stuart and Company Inc of New York at a premium of 297 with interest at three percent.
John L. Lewis plans to stay out of Pennsylvania during the Democratic gubernatorial primary. Lewis backs Lieut. Gov. Thomas Kennedy, but will not issue statements or campaign publicly. Kennedy faces Charles Alvin Jones and Charles J. Margiott. Guffey and labor groups support Kennedy while AFL leaders back Jones.
City council in special session ordered immediate collection of delinquent taxes on real estate with tax sales certificates and expired redemption. They also authorized advertising foreclosures and tackling personal property and poll tax delinquencies. The move followed a report from City Manager Knox showing nearly 170000 owed in real estate taxes not including 1937 dues.
William H. Moran, 64 years a government sleuth and 18 years as head of the U S Secret Service, accepts an advisory role with a major film concern. Moran, known for keeping counterfeit money out of circulation, has avoided memoirs and publicity, preferring to be known as a Presbyterian deacon and bass singer.
The Navy announced plans to build one of the world’s largest drydocks at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. The structure would be about 1000 feet long 132 feet wide and 45 feet deep at mean low water capable of servicing the largest battleships.
Cleveland dispatch reports the Austin Co announces a contract for a $2.5 million expansion to Ethyl-Dow Chemical Corp.'s sea water bromide plant at Kure Beach near Wilmington North Carolina. The plant, opened last year, makes ethylene dibromide from sea water bromine for anti knock motor fuels.
In Hendaye France on May 11 a return of good weather aided Franco forces on the eastern front. An aerial fleet bombed government positions to soften resistance as dry conditions allowed motorized units to operate in Alfambra north of Teruel and Portell northeast. Fighting continued with no major line changes.
Greens boro candidate Major Edney Ridge declares he is 100 percent for Franklin D Roosevelt appealing loyalty to the President as his main platform plank. He states Roosevelt leads the Democratic party and champions the rank and file as seven other candidates enter the race.
In Rio de Janeiro on May 11 President Getulio Vargas led defenders at Guanabara Palace as fascist Integralists attacked. Martial law was declared. rebels suffered casualties and hundreds were arrested. Leaders Salgado and Belmoro Valdeverde named. Vargas’s regime remained in control.
Dr. Lynn Harold Hough of Drew Theological Seminary will deliver the Greensboro College commencement address on May 23 in Greensboro.
