Speedy trial planned for Mahan in kidnaping case
Federal indictments charge Mahan with transporting the boy across a state line and a possible plea could avert a state trial. Pierce County prosecutor Harry H. Johnston said he would not seek state court trial though death penalties could apply if convicted. The Waleys, jailed in Milan and Alcatraz, were cited as involved and may testify if Mahan pleads innocent. Dennis noted Waley conviction relied largely on the victim’s testimony.
