Washington dispatch reports the Senate department stating the United States could mediate between Japan and the nationalist Chinese government only if invited by both sides. The piece notes rain-related damage and rising water levels affecting the Ford case.
The U S appeals court affirmed a Detroit ruling ordering the government to refund 2627309 05 and to pay 35100000 with interest to Mrs Alice G Kales widow of a Detroit manufacturer. Eight former Ford stock holders seek similar refunds and have posted bonds. Interest claimed totals 6790000.
An Atlanta to New York air mail biplane of Pitcairn Aviation crashed on Stone Mountain near Atlanta. Pilot Johnny Kytle escaped with minor injuries after a low foggy flight, rescuing eight mail bags before descending to safety. The beached craft wedged between pines as lights from a memorial and a beacon aided navigation.
Reports from Shanghai and Peking indicate escalating warfare in Shantung. Nationalist Chinese troops reportedly surround Tsinan as Japanese forces deploy reinforcements from Tsing Tao. The Nagoya division of 15 000 to 18 000 men is to be dispatched to Tsing Tao with imperial approval expected.
Lindbergh arrives in Detroit for talks with Ford officials amid revived reports of a trans Atlantic flight along the northern route to England. The aviator met with Ford associates while officials study data on the northern itinerary and await Ford’s return from Europe for confirmation.
Raleigh May 8 A letter from the National Education Association asks State Superintendent A T Allen to investigate public schools in North Carolina for use of propaganda promoting corporate interests. The missive cites approved texts favorable to large power companies and suggests teachers may be unaware of the message.
The army air squadron’s aerial warfare demonstration at Pope Field was rainbound delaying takeoff to Fort Benning. Secretary of War Davis, guest of Governor McLean, remained in Raleigh and then planned a noon train to Washington.
The Bremen three, nearing the end of their American trip, shared cheers with designer Hugo Junkers, who flew across the Atlantic in the Bremen. Junkers, visiting his children Ehrhardt and Herta, attended events with Maj. Fitzmaurice, Capt. Koehl and Baron Von Huenefeld, and joined a Quiet Birdmen gathering and a Friendly Sons of St. Patrick dinner.
Old professor John Henry Kinealy, an original member of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts faculty, now N C State, died yesterday in St Louis. Survived by a daughter, Mrs Grady Jackson.
Detroit May 8. Eleven former Ford minority stockholders faced an added income tax levy on profits from selling stock to Henry Ford in 1919. Mrs. Alice G. Kales paid under protest and appealed, protecting herself against penalties if the board sided against them. The tax appeal board ruled for the stockholders, reducing or canceling various assessments. Kales still faced 2,277,079.98 in protest tax. Other large amounts noted ranged from 9,455,303 for Senator Couzens to 84,404 for Mrs. Rosetta V. Hauss. The core issue was the degree of stock value appreciation from 1903 to 1919.
Walter B. Wilson Jr., American vice consul at Shanghai and Greenville, N C, disappeared May 1 and was found dead in the Wangpoo River ten miles from Shanghai. He left suicide notes. an inquest is set for tomorrow. Wilson, born October 1884, had served as a clerk and vice consul since 1923.
President Coolidge believes the revised Mississippi flood control bill is in better form than earlier drafts though not perfect. Congress has agreed to the conference report and it moves to the Senate for final action before reaching the White House. The main issue remains federal payment of future flood damages in the Mississippi valley.
Rupert Hughes, Washington biographer, disputes a stamp showing the first president praying in the snow at Valley Forge. The two cent issue, due May 26, marks the 150th anniversary of Washington's army wintering at Valley Forge. Hughes questions the hemp of the Potts fable and says historians discredit it.
Maryland voters expressed a clear preference for Herbert Hoover in the presidential primary. They also chose Senator William Cabell Bruce as Democrat candidate and former Governor Philips Lee Goldsborough as Republican nominee for United States senator, with re nomination of all current House members. Hoover was the sole presidential nominee on the ballot.
In Trenton North Carolina Mark Wilson 48 a local merchant died of heart failure after a small fire started in a rival's store. Funeral services were held today.
Five men robbed Angola Indiana's first national bank this morning taking $15000 after binding the president's wife. They forced entry with the president and cashier present then escaped in a gray touring car. Authorities including sheriffs and vigilantes launched an immediate search.
Police patrol roads into Toledo seeking four bandits who kidnapped the president of the First National Bank of Angola Indiana this morning. They tied his wife, looted the vault, and forced the cashier to open it before fleeing in a gray sedan.
In Bucharest and across Romania, Juliu Maniu, peasant leader, prepares to present an ultimatum to the regency demanding the overthrow of the Bra tianu government. A formed cabinet, with Maniu as premier and Vaida Voevod as foreign minister, is ready, while troops guard key towns and Transylvania due to mounting rural unrest.
Governor Albert C. Ritchie told a senate committee he has not sought the Democratic presidential nomination and does not expect to be nominated. He said Maryland’s May 22 convention should instruct delegates to Houston to vote for him if favorable, and would consider outside support if offered. He stressed he has no campaign organization and expects delegates to decide.
President Coolidge warns taxes could go up rather than down if Congress approves a flood of treasury funding proposals. He cites a postal rate cut and payroll raises for postal workers as a combined cost of 58 million dollars, adding the post office already runs a deficit.
London May 8 Hundreds of debutantes prepare gowns for the first court of the season with King George and Queen Mary at Buckingham Palace. White gowns and pale colors prevail while bandeaux with plumes and silver lace bouquets are noted.
