Nuclear plant seen economical despite uranium rise
NRC scientist Dr. Robert A. Gilbert told an Atomic Safety and Licensing Board hearing that Duke Power Co is moving ahead with the Perkins Nuclear Station on the Yadkin River near Mooresville North Carolina. He warned uranium costs could climb to 106 a pound by 1987 but predicted the plant would remain cheaper than coal. Opponents raised concerns about water levels at High Rock Lake and property values along the river.
