Athens Ohio AP President Johnson outlines a bold tour agenda aiming to end slavery and poverty, calling for equal justice and a longer human lifespan. He asserts the nation must eradicate killing and disease, and notes a program to extend life expectancy toward 100 to 120 years.
President Truman plans to stay at Blair House in Washington on the eve of his 80th birthday. Johnson hails him as one of the nation’s greatest assets and hints at a long public life, while Truman jokes about collecting birthday wishes as he enjoys a formal dinner with the District of Columbia Masons and National Press Club luncheon looming.
The man suspected in the slayings of several young boys was ordered to undergo psychiatric observation after a brief court appearance. U S Judge J Robert Martin Jr planned a mental evaluation to determine competency for trial on a kidnapping charge related to 10 year old Johnny Robison. The FBI later located eight year old David Wulf's body in Virginia.
In Hillsville Virginia the FBI traced a missing New Jersey boy’s body to a mountainside scene after a stolen credit card was used at a service station. Eight year old David Wulff of Willingboro disappeared April 1 while en route to a school function. Authorities link the case to ex convict Joseph Francis Bryan Jr. already in custody on kidnapping charges in other disappearances including John David Robison and Dennis Burke. Bryan’s capture and the credit card lead closed a six day search across southwest Virginia and surrounding states.
President Johnson greets 8000 at a Cumberland high school stadium and 4000 at City Hall as he launches a six state Appalachian tour. He chats with jobseekers at the unemployment security office and asks about work history while highlighting his war on poverty. The laments of unemployment 8.5 percent and banners line the streets as Johnson affirms national resolve.
President Johnson plans a brief North Carolina stop with a high profile party including daughter Lynda Byrd and cabinet members such as Celebrezze Wirtz Freeman Roosevelt Jr. and Shriver. Tar Heel congressmen Fountain Cool join the presidential entourage for the Rocky Mount area visit.
The U S Embassy in Moscow protests to the Soviet Union after three American military attaches are drugged during a trip to Odessa March 24 to 26. Two assistant naval attaches and one assistant air attaché were affected but unharmed. Names later identified: Lt. Col. W L Van Meter, Lt. Col. J M Landrigan, and Navy Lt Cmdr S Shapiro. The group suspected dinner in Odessa on March 25 caused the symptoms of drowsiness.
President Johnson pressed Congress to act on the administration program or face a possible recall after the Republican convention. He told reporters that the people’s business must come first while hosting a White House news conference for 1,080 attendees including reporters’ families. He urged speed on civil rights and antipoverty measures, denied any Soviet spy plane deal related to Cuba, and signaled possible late-summer recall if Congress stalls.
Forty four people die as a Pacific Airlines twin engine airliner crashes in the rolling foothills east of San Francisco. FBI reports a smoke puff before impact. The plane carried 40 passengers, a crew of three, and a FAA observer. The pilot was Captain Ernest Clark with First Officer R. Anders and stewardess Marge Schafer. Wreckage scattered widely and area was closed by sheriff offices.
Washington AP Senate sponsors of the civil rights bill won a first test but it was close. After four roll calls Wednesday night a 45 45 tie the Senate rejected 46 to 45 a jury trial amendment to the measure. The defeated amendment would have provided for jury trials in criminal contempt of court cases arising from anti-discrimination injunctions in the bill.
