Soviets Build Atomic Submarines Near U.S. Pace

U.S. sources estimate the Soviet Union may produce seven to ten atomic powered submarines per year, roughly matching American output. The U.S. program proceeds for about two to three more years, with 41 Polaris and 44 attack submarines to be completed. Destroyer Collides With Aircraft Carrier

NORFOLK VA AP The battleship Lake Champlain and destroyer Decatur collided 150 miles east of Cape Henry during an anti submarine warfare operation Atlantic Fleet HQ reported no injuries. Decatur’s superstructure suffered damage and Lake Champlain was damaged though not severely. The collision happened as the destroyer moved away from the carrier after refueling in four mile visibility and moderate seas.
