President Johnson says he is pleased with the economy but worries about disease poverty and civil rights. He asks the Advertising Council to help mobilize support for anti poverty programs and civil rights legislation while noting private construction rises and public apathy as dangers to democracy.
In Indiana Wallace claims a protest vote showing for his civil rights crusade but Gov. Welsh maintains the field for President Johnson. Welsh leads with 355,632 votes to 165,437 for Wallace as 4,240 of 4,416 precincts report, with Goldwater winning the Republican nod and Stassen challenging.

Severe spring storms produced tornadoes across Nebraska North Dakota South Dakota Minnesota Iowa and Kansas. Two people were killed and more than 40 injured as heavy rain hail and winds up to 72 mph lashed communities and farms along a 2 to 3 mile wide path near St. John Stafford County Kansas. Nebraska suffered the heaviest losses.
U.S. sources estimate the Soviet Union may produce seven to ten atomic powered submarines per year, roughly matching American output. The U.S. program proceeds for about two to three more years, with 41 Polaris and 44 attack submarines to be completed. NORFOLK VA AP The battleship Lake Champlain and destroyer Decatur collided 150 miles east of Cape Henry during an anti submarine warfare operation Atlantic Fleet HQ reported no injuries. Decatur’s superstructure suffered damage and Lake Champlain was damaged though not severely. The collision happened as the destroyer moved away from the carrier after refueling in four mile visibility and moderate seas.
Washington AP reports the White House declined to detail Johnsons health beyond saying his heart has enlarged but remains on a normal course. Despite concerns over his energetic pace, officials describe his condition as stable with a normal EKG and pulse, noting his workday balance of rest and activity.
Officials representing 75 nations at GATT talks endorsed John F Kennedy’s tariff reduction goal. France challenged a 50 percent cut as the official aim, with negotiations opening Monday on a plan to lower barriers and expand trade. The effort seeks more business and lower price rises, including farm market concerns.
