New Class Solves Dropout Problem By Aviation Training
Del Norte Union High School in Crescent City California credits an aviation program with reducing dropouts. A student who initially showed no interest began flying lessons and his improved study habits carried into regular subjects, later becoming a Navy jet pilot. Initiated 20 years ago by Don Clausen and Charles Thumen, the program expanded from ground school to flight instruction. In 1952 the district bought a four place plane to continue flying tuition.
