Washington May 30 The beleaguered Teamster Union and its President Dave Beck face a series of new showdowns on corruption charges next week. Beck and other indicted leaders refuse to acknowledge a need for cleanup as the Executive Board plans a strategy meeting Sunday after AFL-CIO ouster proceedings and Senate Rackets Committee hearings.
The 15 North Atlantic Allies weigh a plan to stockpile nuclear weapons and guided missiles for Europe from the Arctic to the Aegean. The United States would lead, supplying arms and designating Supreme Commander in Europe as holding agent in peacetime. Gen. Lauris Norstad currently holds that post.
Senate Republican Leader Knowland warned that adopting a work amendment could kill civil rights legislation. He suggested bypassing the Judiciary Committee if the bill stalls, and said right to work should be left to state choice as a matter of states rights.
In Binghamton New York 1500 volunteers will evacuate 28 miles to Deposit to test civil defense plans for an H-bomb attack. The Evac 12 exercise involves 500 private cars buses trains and volunteers with 12th Ward residents, disability groups, and Lt. Gov. De Luca among evacuees.
