Lifer Climbing Down From Tower Perch After Prison Protest
A 42 year old inmate convicted of rape in 1946 began a 100 foot ascent from a tower perch during a protest. Guards drenched him with water to break the climb as he slowly descended toward an observation cell after a night of cold wind and darkness.

Pasadena observers report the Arend-Roland comet speeding out of the solar system after its two tails puzzled scientists. The headlight-like jet and a separate tail pointed toward the sun sparked theories by Seth Nicholson and Jesse Greenstein about material use and orbital timing. The comet, last seen brightest last week, will be visible to astronomers for about 10 more days and may not return for thousands of years.

Power blackout hits San Francisco area after bomber strike

Hundreds View Body Of McCarthy At Funeral Home
About 500 people viewed Senator Joseph R. McCarthy's body at a Washington funeral home. A folded flag lay at the casket as Marines stood nearby and mourners wept. McCarthy died Thursday from a liver ailment and will lie in state through Sunday before a Monday Senate service, then travel to Appleton, Wisconsin for services and burial Tuesday.
