North Carolina Industry Shifts To Adult Labor Growth
Raleigh May 3. A five year record shows North Carolina manufacturing surpasses one billion dollars with adult workers dominating production. Only about 5,800 of 172,000 workers aged 14 to 16 were employed in 1925, while total employment rose 8,547 from 1923 to 1925, boosting wages from 94.2 million to 134.2 million. Tobacco and cotton goods lead in value, signaling a decline of the child labor issue as industry profits rise with adult labor.

Chestnut Blight Spreads Rapidly in the Highlands
Raleigh May 3 AP Chestnut blight is spreading rapidly through the southern Appalachian highlands and will kill the chestnut trees there. Plant disease expert G W Fant of North Carolina State College says diseased trees can be culled and sold for timber to slow the spread, as the fungus invades through bark cracks and wounds and moves from small branches to the whole tree.
