High Point voters race toward records as noon counts show Davis strongest in the south and Stanton leading the north. Automobiles shuttle voters amid a peaceful, highly contested mayoral battle with council races tight in wards one through four and several incumbents facing strong challenges.
The Ruth Snyder murder trial sees the defense rest and Henry Judd Gray take the stand. Witnesses recount Snyder upstairs downstairs alibi disputes and questioned confessions amid courtroom tensions and adjournment discussions.
Donations to the Mississippi Relief fund rise to 1925.28 with less than 75 needed to reach 2000. The list includes Consolidated Veneer and Panel, Green St Baptist Church, Mrs. Ida Mungans fifth grade, Miss Pollack, and many others contributing varied amounts. Continued on page eight.
Exchange Telegraph from Tokyo reports that John Van A. MacMurray, U.S. minister to China, has resigned over policy differences with Washington. Dispatches note Japan’s puzzled view and say the move may push the United States and Japan toward closer alignment on China and oppose punitive actions for the Nanking and Hankow incidents.
In Fairmont and Morgantown crews locate six more bodies at the Everetsville mine, raising the death toll to 24. About 70 miners remain missing as rescue teams push to access the wrecked workings after a Saturday explosion. Ambulances and a temporary morgue await news of survivors.
Refuges move to safety while floodwaters from the Mississippi and its tributaries inundate northeastern and east central Louisiana parishes. Rescue craft operate in the funnel between the Red River and the Mississippi, as levees are reinforced and crevasses fixed. River gauges rise and fall across Vicksburg, Natchez, New Orleans, and Shreveport areas with forecasts of slow crests and continued high water.
George L. Jarvis a 33 year old Walnut Cove attorney was found dead in his Mercantile building office. A pistol lay beside him with a fatal wound entering the right temple and exiting above the left ear. No note was left and friends say he had suffered a mental derangement recently. He was unmarried and had lived in Walnut Cove for ten years coming from Wilkes county. His father resides in Shelby.
Greensboro May 3. Voters in Greensboro travel to the polls to select six city councilmen from twelve candidates in a highly contested election. Early indications point to the heaviest turnout in the city’s history as election workers organize the process using an optional Australian ballot system. Incumbents among the candidates include Frank A. Brooks BE. B. Jeffries Paul C. Lindley Julian Price and others.
Secretary Kellogg flatly denied Tokyo via London reports that American Minister John A. MacMurray at Peking resigned. He said no official dispatch hinted MacMurray contemplated such action and attributed disagreements to misunderstanding or information gaps aimed at creating difficulties for Washington.
A semi official Japanese message from Peking says US Britain France Japan and Italy ministers met to discuss a second note on the Han Kow outrages. No agreement was reached as the United States opposes sending another note now.
About 100 delegates and visitors have arrived in Elizabeth City for the 44th convention of the East Carolina Diocese Protestant Episcopal Church. The first regular session is set for tomorrow morning at Christchurch.
T A Kearns says he mailed his tax payment well before the deadline but delays at the local post office caused the check to arrive late. He contests the delinquent tax status and seeks resolution.
In Iverettsville mine Fairmont May 3 AP reports rescuers locating a new miner’s body in the main drift about 3000 feet back, raising the known dead to 18. The last victim found wore a belt buckle marked M suggesting he was a section boss not in the trapped group.
Walter L. Boothe, on artificial respiration for 12 days in Roanoke hospital, faded further as his condition worsened. Bedside aides report his grip on life weakening, with paralysis advancing and doctors saying the end may be near.
Torrential rains and lightning have caused widespread damage in Cabarrus County over several days. Creeks and rivers overflowed, and on the G. G. Ellis farm a barn burned due to the weather despite efforts to save adjoining structures.
The Enterprise will announce the election returns at 8 o clock with a blow by blow report of the Stribling Loughran fight. The 10 round bout from Ebbett Field will be relayed direct via special wire. A large crowd is expected outside the office for the updates and reports.
May 3 in Greensboro, 14 council seats, incumbents vs challengers. Voter turnout expected to top 4,500 of 6,000 as lines form at precincts. Newspapers show mixed editorial stances with Daily Record opposing the mayor and Brooks, Daily News backing incumbents, and Patriot supporting anti administration factions.
Charlotte May 3 AP M F Redd appears set to win the mayor’s chair after Julia Alexander withdraws. The main contest focuses on public safety and public works commissioners and school board seats. Walter Orr and Major Robertson seek public safety. Robert Brown and W S Stancil aim for public works. four candidates vie for two school board seats.
In Louisiana and adjoining parishes, flood waters from the Red and Mississippi rivers breach levees and advance north and west. Rescue crews operate through the night on embankments near Vidalia and Newellton as communities flee, with the relief flotilla from Natchez aiding evacuation and protection efforts.
