French forces take the initiative on the Somme front delivering a telling blow near Amiens. They push Germans from a hill, claim a major advance superior to any other position along the line in the sector.
French forces push ahead along the Avre river taking Hill 82 and adjacent woods in a two mile stretch south east of Amiens. The advance strengthens a line of high ground from Haines to Castel and preserves key positions near the Somme. Britons hold Villers-Bretonneux ridge sustaining the entente line north of the Somme.
In Surry county Superior court J. J. Wallace, chairman of the county commissioners, pleaded guilty to a secret assault. The court ordered Wallace to buy 8, constrained Liberty bonds totaling 8,100 and deposit them with the clerk, give 100 to the Red Cross and 100 to the Y M C A, and resign from the county commission. The assault arose from a wartime argument with strong anti government remarks.
New York May 3 the cotton market showed renewed weakness with first prices irregular and declines between 15 and 47 points. By the end of the first hour active months were 45 to 75 points higher with Jay at 25.20 and October at 24.55 futures opened firmer with May 25.60 July 25.60 October 24.65 to 25.10 December 24.70 January 24.56.
