Deserted WWII plane filled with marijuana found in Tennessee
Two tons of marijuana were discovered in a deserted Lockheed nodestar aircraft at Rockwood Municipal Airport. Morgan County Sheriff Cecil Burge said two men, identified as Robert Heart Ward and Greg Thompson, were charged with possession with intent to resell after being apprehended near Interstate 40. Authorities believe the plane and cargo had been left there for about 12 hours and that the men, possibly California residents, were seen wandering along county roads as locals heard of the discovery.

Escapee Alfred Bishop Recaptured After Car Theft
Alfred Bishop, 32, of Conover, escaped from Wilkes County prison on work release and fled in a stolen car. He wrecked, then took another vehicle and crossed into Virginia where authorities recaptured him in Independence. Bishop was serving a sentence for breaking and entering.

Six Killed In N C Weekend Auto Crashes
Six people died in North Carolina weekend crashes including Frances Ann Williams and Carolyn Botts both 17 from Greensboro. Other victims were Donald Fletcher 20 of Bessemer City and John Hood Brewer 19 of Pink Hill. A 5 year old child Catiia Lawrence of Lawndale also died. The incidents occurred on US 421 and rural roads in Sampson, Cleveland, and Union counties.

Southern Bell reports a 65 to 70 percent fall in directory assistance calls since January 16 when charges began. A spokesman says the cut saves North Carolina operations just over $3 million annually. Customers get five free calls monthly with 20 cents for each additional call. The firm has 25079 operators, about 80 temporary, and 259 percent of residential customers were charged versus 419 percent of business customers.
