More than 2,000 Marines endured the roughest buffeting from an atomic blast at Yucca Flat as two combat battalions moved from foxholes to test readiness. Ground zero exposure decimated nearby equipment while dummies farther back survived, showing what a real field assault might entail. General Burger noted limited ground radiation blocked movement but praised the training value and reported some guns remained usable up to 200 yards from the detonation. Sgt. Edward L.
