A reader letter harshly condemns Nazi crimes and proposes drastic solutions. One editor calls for sterilizing remaining Germans to prevent future wars while another suggests uprooting many German citizens with families and resettling them abroad alongside an equal number of foreign nationals to ease transfer.
Raleigh May 1 Gov Cherry recommended retention of Vance Baise as engineer and a salary increase from 6000 to 7500 a year to align with new highway schedules. He did not mention Ross as chief counsel amid turnover talks on the state high and public works commission.
In Moscow on May Day Premier Stalin, in a steel grey uniform, stood atop Lenin’s red marble tomb as thousands watched. He praised the Red Army with its Allies, declaring Germany defeated and the homeland freed, while Gen. Alexei Antonov proclaimed the enemy expelled. Thousands gathered to see tanks and guns on parade.

Florida faced what officials called the worst fire in Everglades history as flames scorched grazing lands across scores of square miles. Broward County Fire Warden Charles Davis reported a 10 mile west Fort Lauderdale blaze under control after burning over 20 square miles, while further fires burned north of the Tamiami Trail near Miami and at Forman Field, with tractors digging firebreaks to halt the spread.
Approximately 100 American pilots were liberated by British 14th Army troops near Pegu in Southern Burma on April 30. They were flown to hospitals in India after liberation from Japanese captures following air battles over Burma.

In Milan on May 1 a crude wooden coffin held Mussolini’s beaten body at the Milan morgue awaiting disposition as reports spread on Marshal Rodolfo Graziani’s fate. One account said Graziani was at allied headquarters before a trial. another claimed he was sentenced to death and executed.
Ernest Eggers, 25, a resident of Leonard Street, pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon in a March 3 incident that left his wife Wilma Eggers seriously wounded after he shot at a man in her room and then himself. Judge J. H. Clement sentenced Eggers to two years on the roads. Eggers claimed the shooting was an accident while aiming at a man he had found in his wife’s room. he admitted he had never seen the man before that night. The report also notes a separate two-year sentence for William E. Oxford on abandonment and non-support charges related to his wife and child. Additionally, Charles Edward Byrd, 18, of East Washington Street, and Nathan, 18, pleaded guilty to larceny involving a tank truck owned by Firestone Stores.
Prime Minister Churchill hinted that Europe peace could come before Saturday but said no statement was ready in Parliament. In Stockholm Count Folke Bernadotte met with Erik Bohemars as the Swedish envoy discussed efforts after flying from Copenhagen.
Stockholm radio reported the Swedish foreign office said Count Folke Bernadotte did not deliver any new message for the allies through the ministry. The broadcast was recorded by the FCC.
Bernadotte refused to say if he carried a message from Himmler and noted contact between the Swedish Red Cross and allied reps would likely go through the foreign office. Churchill told MPs there is no special war position statement, only that it is more satisfactory than five years ago and a brief, exceptional update could come this week. He suggested a peace announcement might precede final surrenders, but complete surrender is not guaranteed.
Greensboro May 1 Charles H Robertson state collector of internal revenue reported a drop in North Carolina federal revenue for April and for the first 10 months of the fiscal year compared with the same period last year. April collections fell 11 052 638 92 and ten month totals were 708 477 472 53 versus 723 507 712 09 a decline of 15 030 237 56.
Third army presses toward Berchtesgaden within 58 miles as Seventh army advances from Munich into Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass. Allied forces push north linking Elbe bridgehead, threatening Schleswig Holstein, while German commandos hold in the Alpine redoubt. General Beyer and staff captured. two field marshals seized yesterday.
Sister Elizabeth Kenny accuses a national charity and Dr. Morris Fishbein of organized boycott against her infantile paralysis treatment. Fishbein says Kenny method now used in the majority of hospitals as debate continues in Illinois and West Virginia.
