A U S Army report describes a night ambush on a Germany bound highway where two American trucks were struck by a hidden cable as Germans swarmed the crash site and fired. Two Americans were killed and one wounded. a fourth escaped. The piece notes rising werewolf activity and German sabotage, with civilians and disguised soldiers opposing Allied forces.
British and American dispatches report Nazi defenses collapsing as Soviet forces led by Marshals Zhukov and Konev press toward Berlin. Battles rage from Tiergarten to Unter den Linden with heavy hand to hand fighting and widespread destruction shrinking greater Berlin to a small pocket.
From Moscow comes word that Karl Renner, 75, a former chancellor and staunch anti communist after World War I, heads the new provisional Austrian government formed in Vienna. Renner authored the Austrian republic constitution and will steer the post liberation administration.
In Milan on April 30 Mussolini, Claretta Petacci, and 17 fascist leaders were executed by Italian partisans near Como as they tried to flee to Switzerland. Their bodies were displayed publicly in Milan and hammered by angry crowds. Graziani claimed he sought to surrender. Mussolini was shot after capture Friday and held at San Domingo prison. Paris April 30. U.S. soldiers liberated from German camps will return home as fast as the army can move them. The agreement bars former prisoners from further combat or service in the war, prioritizes the sick and wounded, and uses evacuation camps for others with baths meals clothes and medical care.
In Dachau Germany April 30 the U S 42nd and 45th divisions liberated the Dachau camp freeing 32 000 inmates. Infantry riding tanks bulldozers and rifles rolled in from the northwest to surprise the SS guards after lunch.
The 14th Armored Division freed 110000 allied prisoners at Salag 7A Mossburg, correcting an earlier claim of 27000. This marked Germanys largest POW camp liberation.
Scores of S S men were taken prisoners and dozens slain. American and trusted workers outside the barbed wire enclosure joined in the action. Poles, Frenchmen and Russians seized S S weapons and used them against their captors. Officials said several distinguished inmates were moved, including Stalin's son Jacob Djugashvili, Kurt Schuschnigg and his wife, and Pastor Martin Niemoeller.
