Strikes by engineers and firemen cripple New York lighterage port traffic delaying tugboats freight and rail movement. About 100000 workers join the May Day parade while garment workers locked out headline the protest. Rebels in Dublin surrender as German offensives renew near Verdun and Mesopotamia losses mount.
Jule Fage, nicknamed Villa of High Point, is jailed on a four month sentence for carrying a concealed weapon and bound over to the Superior Court on charges including larceny from the High Point Motor Company and leather from Snow Lumber. Grissom is also bound over after capture. Fage was pursued through town after a Sunday night burglary on April 9 with multiple pistols reportedly pawned in Virginia.
Thousands walk or ride in autos and buggies as Pittsburgh Railway Company lines shut down after a midnight walkout. Interurban routes stop and local railroads add trains to meet surging crowds while stores dispatch delivery teams. About 3,200 conductors and motormen plus 800 others are affected as workers demand higher wages with no disorders reported.
In Chicago on May 1 police guard the Deering plant of International Harvester to avert trouble as a week old strike by 500000 twine factory workers continues. The company offered a nine hour day with ten hours pay, which the strikers refused.

The war office informed coal owners in England and Wales that 10 000 volunteer miners skilled in tunneling and timbering are needed for British forces in France. They will not receive military training, and owners seek ways to supply the men without reducing coal production.
High Point officers found a stolen Ford near Jamestown Saturday night and captured Colian Lee, a 14 year old negro boy, Sunday morning about midway to Kernersville. The car had been taken from a Winston man Thursday night and Lee reportedly drove toward a relative near Jamestown where the fire started after water insulation failed. Chiefs Gray and Thomas, aided by Winston officers, recovered the vehicle and detained Lee.
Charles P Hedgecock died Sunday afternoon at his Winston-Salem road home four miles north of the city after Brights disease. In his 60s, he leaves a wife and four children. Funeral services were held at Abbott's Creek church at 4, with interment in the church cemetery. A prominent Abbott's Creek farmer, he was described as a man of sterling character.

Superintendent Thornwell Haynes delivered the closing commencement talk at Denton schools on Sunday afternoon. He spoke on Help Somebody Today to an audience that filled the school auditorium, traveling there with W. E. Price general manager of the C and Y R railroad in a Mr Price’s combination Ford railroad car.
El Paso May 1 Major General Funston announced that only one more conference would be held with Mexican representatives on the military question. Generals Scott and Funston await Washington's reply before a time is set. Officials expect a late today or tomorrow resumption of talks.

The Supreme Court ruled Ignatus T. Lincoln, a former MP and self confessed spy, must be returned to England for forgery trial. Lincoln was arrested in New York after a sensational escape and habeas corpus petition. He argued extradition violated a US Britain treaty barring political offense extraditions.
The senate judiciary committee failed to vote on Louis D Brandeis for the Supreme Court after hours of debate and adjourned until Wednesday with a possible vote next Monday. Republican senators urged immediate action while several Democrats cited Senator Shields absence from Tennessee as a reason to delay.
The Supreme Court upheld the conviction of David Lamar known as the Wolf of Wall Street. In the New York Federal Court he was found guilty of impersonating A. Mitchell Palmer and J. P. Morgan to defraud. Lamar received a two year prison sentence. The court ruled a congressman is an officer of the United States under the impersonation statute.
London announces that all Irish rebel leaders in Dublin have surrendered. Raleigh reports Junius H. Mullins, longtime Raleigh chief of police, found dead at his home after suffering rheumatism and indigestion. he was 58.
A late night fire partially destroyed the Cressot gun works in Cherborough with the cause still undetermined. The incident was reported by the Associated Press from Cherborough with Paris dispatches noting the delay in confirmation.
The British steamship City of Lucknow of 3669 tons gross has been sunk according to a report from London dated May 1 by the Associated Press.
