Shippers urged to cooperate with railroads

Washington April 29 Shippers and distributors of early fruit and vegetables in the south are urged by the department of agriculture to cooperate with railroads to prevent a threatened shortage of refrigerator cars for moving their products. The Interstate Commerce Commission has called the railroads' attention to the situation.

Wheeler Martin Dead Following Paralysis Stroke

Wheeler Martin former United States internal revenue collector under Roosevelt and Taft died at his Williamston home after a stroke of paralysis. He was 55, a longtime Republican figure in the state, and served as collector of internal revenue for five years before 1913. He is survived by a widow, a son and daughter, two brothers and a sister. funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon.

Nationwide check clearing plan announced by Fed Board

Washington April 29 The Federal Reserve board announced that it will implement June 15 new country wide check clearing and collecting plans. Under the plan the actual expenses of clearing and collection will be charged to member banks proportionate to system use.

District Conference Ends With Notable Success in Greensboro

The Greensboro district conference of the Western North Carolina Methodist Church adjourned after a series of sermons and discussions. Dr. C. W. Byrd led a morning sermon on Christ's mission and a strong revival spirit prevailed. Delegates were named for the annual conference, and licensing actions were taken for two preachers. The meeting praised South Main Street Church for hospitality and planned next year’s venue at Holts Chapel.

Latta Recommitted to the State Hospital in Raleigh

C E Latta, an inmate who charged mismanagement at the state hospital for the insane, was recommitted to the institution. The governor said the investgation would continue with a public report set for May 11 and full publicity of findings will be given.

Boy Scouts Sign Lyceum Series for High Point

High Point will host a lyceum season again with the Boy Scouts as organizers. A contract with the Hived mont bureau secures a fall and winter program for 1916 starting in October. The Piedmont is expected to present high quality entertainments to the city with Scouts promoting enthusiasm and public access.

Violent Fighting at Verduns Resumed Across Front

In Verdun France the German offensive resumes with a strong attack near Thiaumont east of the Meuse and massed assault near Avocourt and Hill No 304 west of the river.
