British jets struck the supertanker Torrey Canyon, setting its wreckage ablaze as a vast smoke pall spread. Oil slicks remained, with some reaching the French coast while Britain and France warned of beach pollution and mobilized detergents and anti oil measures. Royal Navy bombers scored extensive hits as troops and volunteers patrolled Cornwall and southern England coasts.

AFTRA Strike Affects News Staff Across Major Markets

Newsmen actors singers and announcers who belong to AFTRA walk out in a dispute between networks and about 100 local newsmen and staff announcers in Los Angeles New York and Chicago. Independent stations remain unaffected. ABC says it will keep broadcasting by using supervisory personnel to cover news and reports. Government denies Manchester claims on JFK nuclear policy
