Thomas Pence died of pneumonia at 43 in Washington. The same day officials weighed Germany submarine actions after the Sussex incident, with President Wilson consulting Congress before any move. Pence, long a Democratic strategist and Wilson ally, was Raleigh born and Wake Forest educated.

The body of Thomas J. Pence secretary of the Democratic national committee died in Washington early today. It will arrive in Raleigh Tuesday morning and the funeral will be held here either Tuesday or Wednesday according to messages to relatives.

War report shows large transfer of London transport to front

London March 27 More than 4000 omnibus drivers and conductors and 3315 cabs and omnibuses have been sent to the front according to the annual traffic branch report of the Board of Trade revenue. It also notes a sharp drop in horse drawn vehicles with 1159 drawn by horses in 1914 versus 3905 in 1903.

El Paso reports flying columns of American cavalry banding south of El Valle to trap Francisco Villa. Casillas Grandes base detachment sweeps foothills with three cavalry columns pursuing Villa who is said to have pressed 85 youths into his ranks. Brigadier General Pershing expects months to capture Villa.

Great Baraca Philathea Convention Draws Townwide Crowd

The Guilford county Baraca Philathea convention held two sessions in High Point with 800 to 1,000 attendees. Marshall A. British Air Raid Failure Reported by Germany

German statement says British air raid on Schleswig-Holstein failed. Two armed fishing steamers were sunk by English vessels. German torpedo boat destroyers were hit and only a few torpedo boats engaged. one boat has not yet returned.

Mrs. W F Wall of Oakland cotton mills near Jamestown died suddenly Sunday evening around 7 while visiting her niece Mrs Cassall at 114 Valeasley street. Cause unknown but likely heart failure. Funeral at Center church Randolph county at 11 this morning with burial in the church cemetery.

Col W W Jones, a well known attorney and former state senator, died in Asheville after a lengthy illness. A Confederate veteran, he was with General Lee at the surrender at Appomattox.
