German Raider Grief and British Alcantra Sink Each Other

London reports both the German raider Grief and the British armed merchant cruiser Alcantra were sunk in a North Sea engagement on February 29. Five German officers and 115 German sailors were captured. British losses were 74 dead and 69 missing. The Alcantra, 570 feet long and built in 1913, served Royal Mail Steamship and carried 11 300 gross tonnage.

City to Install Opera Chairs in School Auditorium

City Manager orders 598 five ply veneer opera chairs with hat racks for the school auditorium. The floor will be raised to incline the seating, costing at least 1000 dollars, with work starting immediately to be ready for May commencement exercises.

Munitions Shipment For Carranza Delayed By Inspection

Eliseo Arrendondo, Carranza's ambassador, protested to Secretary Lansing that ammunition from New York to Carranza was delayed by customs. Wilson Chief of Police Held for Killing Negro

J A Wiggs chief of police was ordered held for further investigation after the killing of Philip Wood a negro. The coroner s jury recommended Wiggs remain in office. Wiggs and a deputized citizen were taking Wood to jail when Wood allegedly struck and moved to draw a gun prompting Wiggs to shoot. Two pocketknives were found as Wood s only weapons.
