The Enterprise editor Holt McPherson announced his bid for mayor on the Democratic ticket after consultations with publishers who endorse his candidacy. He will take a leave of absence from directing news and editorial policy, with Joe Brown serving as acting editor during the campaign while McPherson continues his column without campaign related content.

Ransom Paid and Gallery Threat Prompt Release in Kidnap Case

Two youths freed after separate abductions. In Macon the 11 year old Michael Register was held nearly 20 hours as his parents paid 5000 dollars ransom and the kidnapper was arrested. In Memphis the 13 year old Richard Batey was released after his father demanded removal of nude photos from an art exhibit. No immediate arrests were reported.

Pet Cat Saves Youngster's Life in Greensboro

In Greensboro baby Ricky Ketcham, 3 months, nearly died when a loose crib screw let the side collapse. The family heard the cat Pet Cat meow at 5 am Sunday and found Ricky hanging by his neck between rail and mattress. The cat’s alert may have saved his life.
