Disputed Reason for Plant Closure at Darlington Mill

An attorney for Deering Milliken Co. argued the Darlington South Carolina plant closed in 1956 for economic reasons and back pay. The Supreme Court held a firm may close an entire business but cannot close part of it. The mill closed shortly after workers voted to join the Textile Workers Union of America. NLRB hearings occurred across Charlotte Greenville Atlanta and Washington to probe anti union aims.

Rogers Is Given Life For Slaying Police Officer

Rogers received a mandatory life term for first degree murder with a mercy recommendation after being found guilty. Judge Joseph Parker imposed the sentence immediately. The state argued Rogers aided in store robberies in Snow Hill hours before Officer Eason was shot near the Farmville bus station at about 6 am. Police said Rogers was the man seen with Eason and fired a .32 caliber pistol. State crime lab tests supported the claim he fired on the day of the shooting. A Farmville resident testified Rogers jumped into his car and threatened to shoot if not allowed to ride.
