Foxhole Heroism Marine Dies Saving Mate
19 year old Pfc James R. Reilly of Esopus New York sacrificed his life to smother an enemy hand grenade and save his platoon mate Pfc Edward Burgess of Portland Oregon in a Viet Nam action 15 miles southwest of Da Nang Reilly dived on the grenade at a machine gun position in G Company 2nd Battalion 3rd Marine Regiment Burgess surviving with injuries and recalling the moment. The company commander Lt Col Roy Biggers said Reilly would be recommended for the highest combat decoration possible.
