Market Slide Deepens As Profit Taking Looms

Stocks declined broadly in moderate trading as investors scaled back optimism on a swifter recovery. Dow 30 fell to 902.93, AP 60 down to 313.7, with declines led by steels, rubber, farm equipment, electronics, chemicals, rails, and drugs. Major movers included Brunswick up 29.5 on a large block, Du Pont off 1.5, Mattel down 5.58 after earnings miss and delayed opening.

Forest Fire Rages Across 26000 Acres In North Carolina

Nearly 200 firefighters battled through the night to contain a forest fire burning across about 26 000 acres of coastal timberland since Monday. Officials said the blaze, blamed on an Air Force practice bomb, could not be controlled soon but good weather might prevent further spread. The Stumpy Point village faced a brief threat as winds up to 40 mph fanned the flames, with energy from 106 firefighters plus aircraft and retardants aiding efforts.
