Dropouts Roam as Society Collapses in Florida Wheat Field Plan

In a satirical fiction rhythm the piece envisions Myra Kandon and George Coleman leaving college to join friends on a wheat-germ farm in Florida. They find Uhaul offices padlocked, auto parts scarce, water mains broken, and food shelves bare as oil workers quit for welfare. The elderly man laments shortages and argues for limits on dropouts while noting the irony of many joining the movement at once.

Officials Tour Local Schools In Guilford County

Guilford County commissioners and High Point Board of Education toured 11 city schools in rainy weather Friday. They highlighted needs from building replacements at Cloverdale and Emma Blair to space for buses, play areas, student parking, and vocational training. Fire hazards and space issues in aging schools were noted, with Emma Blair singled out for bowed walls and limited toilets. The tour, part of an upcoming bond plan, moves to Greensboro and Guilford County schools, with a decision on funding levels to be announced at a March 41 meeting.

Sheriff Blasts County Police Plan as Political Move

Guilford County Sheriff Paul Gibson denounced a nonpolitical county police proposal as a political maneuver by the Board of County Commissioners. The plan would shift patrol duties from the sheriff’s department to a new unit while the sheriff retains court work and jail operations. Gibson argued the move targets an elected official and noted his department’s growth and improvements funded by county money. A public hearing on the proposal was scheduled for early April, with Gibson likely to be absent due to a golf tournament.
