Albany March 16 Postmaster General James A Farley warned that defeat of Roosevelt work relief would trigger a whirl of logrolling and prolong the nation mood. He labeled rival schemes as impractical and warned against using relief for political gain.
Washington March 16 The Senate voted to extend the federal relief administration one year and delayed action on extending the PWA for two more years until Monday. The move spurred speculation that Ickes and Hopkins would oversee the new relief program with three advisory groups planned. The chamber also extended the relief agency to June 30 1936 and faced Republican resistance over funding levels while continuing to rely on federal dollars for direct relief and public works transfers.
London March 16 AP reports a sweeping peace ballot driven by the League of Nations union and allied groups shows strong support for restricting private armaments. Ballot questions cover League membership, disarmament, abolition of private arms plants, and nonmilitary security measures with early results through March 7.
State Sen J T Burrus says the joint Senate House committee will investigate prison conditions, visiting camps and gathering findings to prepare a final report. Investigations will be thorough and may be kept secret until completion.
In Bryson City on March 16 a Swain County jury finds Ed Nelson 22 and Jess Wiggins 19 guilty of second degree murder in the arson burglary and murder of Tom Cline a Bla merchant on December 14 Each man is sentenced by Judge J A Randsenau to 50 years in state prison.
Asheville report says a guard sentenced inmate serving two to three years for criminal conspiracy in the sale of a $100,000 Transylvania County note refused tonight to accept a parole granted by Governor Ehringhaus.
The department of commerce experimental radio campus plane flew four hours at sea for tests and landed at Oakland airport at 6:15 p m Pacific standard time today.
In Raleigh on March 16 Statler interests planned to file a caveat against a will of Mrs Elva Davidson supposed to leave nearly all her estate to husband H Bradley Davidson Jr The will dated February 15 1936 names $5000 to Radcliffe College and Dwight School each with a library grant of 2000 as bequests and sets the remainder to Davidson The estate is estimated around 560000 with a 12000 annuity for Davidson Two men witnesses from Massachusetts signed the document and the will was filed in Moore County Court at Carthage by Herbert Seawell the Carthage attorney The filing follows the marriage of Mrs Davidson to Davidson at Pinehurst and a divorce history involving his previous wife.
Barbara Hutton Miivani Woolworth heiress announced she had begun divorce proceedings against Prince Alexis Mdivani. She remained secluded in her hotel suite with only her maid and masseur present as details emerged. The maid said she is upset and has acted strangely since arriving.
Raleigh reports the 1935 General Assembly advances a revenue bill estimated to raise about 63 million dollars for the biennium. The measure, aimed at financing state needs, faces a Monday debate as lawmakers also study an appropriations bill of 64 million.
Winston Salem March 15 Judge Clayton Moore approved a settlement of the Smith Reynolds estate worth 27 975 000 with a minor clause delaying certain Reynolds Tobacco stock until November 4 1943. If Christopher Smith Reynolds or Anne Cannon Reynolds die before then their share goes to kin on the maternal side. Libby Holman would receive 750 000 and Reynolds family members split the remainder for a memorial foundation.
A widespread eight pronged legislative program from the federal government aims to create state planning agencies and broaden public ownership and regulation of electric and utility works. It calls for aligning state laws with Public Works Administration bond rules, housing and slum clearance cooperation, and state recovery agencies modeled after the NRA.
Washington March 16 the department of agriculture reports that February likely marked the peak of farm prices for the first half of 1935 due to large foreign imports and new crops. The bureau foresees smaller hog price declines, steadier cattle prices, further declines for dairy and eggs, possible seeds demand weakness, and only modest truck crop price drops into May or June.
