Roosevelt Forces Push Big Relief Bill Through Senate

March 16 Washington reports Senate leaders pressed to pass the $4.88 billion work and relief bill after defeating the McCarran wage amendment 50 to 38. The measure, central to Roosevelt’s program, faced further votes next week with attempts by Byrd Adams and others to cut or alter totals. The AFL condemned the McCarran defeat, while Russell’s compromise would let the president pay security wages on most federal projects, with prevailing rates on permanent federal buildings. Only Hale and Metcalf voted nay among Republicans.
