All Inductees Under 21 Will Go Into Service
Washington reports that practically all inductees under 21 will be drafted for three months starting today. The Army and Navy will limit under 21 assignments to a few in specialized naval programs such as radio technicians and combat aircrew. Navy needs will be met from the 21 to 38 age group during this period. The move expands infantry recruitment while Navy enlistment of 17 year olds remains unaffected. About 80,000 youths turn 18 monthly, with roughly 55,000 going to the Army and 25,000 to the Navy.
