State Signs Thoroughfare Plan Agreement For High Points Streets

The State Highway Commission and High Point officials finalized a long term plan for streets to 1980 including major arteries and bypasses. Financing remains a hurdle with an estimated city share of 10 million dollars for utility moves and rights of way. A top priority widening of North Main Street progresses with engineering surveys in final stages and a hoped for spring contract award. Local engineers will speed designs to reduce reliance on the state.

Commission Denies Rezoning Near Fairfield Plaza

The city planning commission denied a rezoning request by Charles Edward Smith to turn his residential lot at the northeast corner of Fairfield and Brentwood into neighborhood retail to build a service station near the planned Fairfield Plaza Shopping Center. Promoters of the center opposed piecemeal development and urged a comprehensive approach. The panel also denied Plymouth Furniture Co. a land rezoning near I 85 to industrial, citing insufficient land for a true industrial district, while allowing continued nonconforming use. A preliminary Brentwood Street subdivision of 14 lots was approved, and plans outlined for citywide zoning to create two main industrial categories in planned parks and light-to-medium operations.
