Former French Premier Georges Bidault would reject asylum in Germany if banned from political action to unseat Charles de Gaulle. Road Bond Measures Offered in North Carolina Legislature

Both houses moved bills for a $200 million road bond issue to voters between August and October. Funds would divide into $100 million for primary urban and highway roads and $100 million for secondary roads. R L Pope Dies In Thomasville

R L Pope 75 pioneer banker former legislator developer and civic leader of Thomasville died at Haven Nursing Home after several weeks illness. He helped build First National Bank of Thomasville into a strong home owned bank later merged into Wachovia. Survived by wife daughter Mildred Proctor and son Liston C Pope Yale divinity dean later. Funeral plans not yet arranged.

Tornadoes Strike Tennessee Alabama and Mississippi Toll Rises

A string of tornadoes swept through parts of Tennessee Alabama and Mississippi causing five deaths and extensive property damage. Flooding closed roads near Chattanooga Knoxville and Kingsport while seven people were reported missing near Parrottsville before being accounted for. In Cullman Alabama two women died as homes collapsed and damage in the Cullman area reached about 250000 with several injured.

Floods Plague Kentucky Hit Harlan and Pikeville Flooding

The worst flood in southeast Kentucky history forced thousands from homes with millions in damage and one death. Fireman Hogan Billiter died when a coal train derailed into a river near Pikeville. Evacuations, river crests, and widespread inundation affected Harlan, Hazard, and Breathitt County as roads flooded and residents waited for relief.

Congressmen Witness dire conditions at capital schools

Six members of the House Education Committee toured Pierce Elementary and Hine Junior High in Washington DC. They described overcrowded rooms, damp basements, outdated textbooks, and minimal facilities, urging construction funds and improvements for the capital’s aging public schools.

Veteran Kills Wife and Four Children in New Hampshire

An unemployed Air Force veteran, Joseph M. Simichak, 39, killed his wife Nobuko 38 and their four children with a claw hammer in Manchester. He confessed at police headquarters at 4:25 a.m. The victims included Patricia 3, Elizabeth 2, Katherine 6 months, and Franklin 4 who died later. Nobuko died soon after. Simichak, married in Japan in 1957, was charged with murder with no motive disclosed.

Strangler Strikes Belmont as Fear Grips Village

Belmont Hill residents live in fear after the ninth Greater Boston strangulation murder since June. Police seek a 35 year old cleaning man supplied by the state employment office, last known address Cambridge, with prior theft and robbery records. Bessie Goldberg, 62, volunteer at MGH and Chelsea Naval Hospital, was found strangled in her Scott Road home.
