Committees Power Behind Chamber of Commerce
About 300 members serve on Chamber committees this year, totaling nearly 13 000 man hours of work by year end. Calvin T. Rice, assistant manager, calls committees the lifeblood and notes 27 committees span local and state legislation, economic development, beautification, and city development. He says accomplishments arise from collective effort of many volunteers, not a single person. Rice is Furman University graduate, living with wife and two children on Edgedale Drive.

Chamber Executive Covington Shaped High Point Chamber
George Covington, executive vice president of the High Point Chamber of Commerce, embodies the walking encyclopedia of the city. A Jamestown native and former full time mayor, he led membership growth to over 1,200 firms in a decade, championing diversification and community impact while noting his unique early life as Guilford County’s smallest baby. He studied at UNC Chapel Hill before leaving for work in lean years.

Chamber of Commerce Aids Inquiries From Schools
The Chamber of Commerce in High Point handles a high volume of inquiries from school children and others seeking information about cities and markets. Telephones ring constantly, staff of four secretaries fields 37 to 100 calls daily, and before furniture markets desks are arranged at the Exposition Building to speed buyer placement. About 1,500 annual requests come from schoolchildren, with many others seeking statistical data and attraction information. The staff includes Miss Mary Steward, Mrs. S. B. Venable, Miss Mary Michell, and Mrs. Albert Simmons.
