Treasury agents announced Rawls confessed at Norfolk to the Tuesday night killing of Treasury Agent John William Jackson Jr. Rawls implicated Joe Thomas West in the shooting near the Virginia North Carolina border. Officials said both would be sent to North Carolina for prosecution.

President Roosevelt opens the 1938 community chest drive in the White House East Room urging a united front for private charity. He promotes work relief to provide jobs for able bodied unemployed and cautions one third of the unemployed are under 25, stressing jobs over relief when possible.
New York March 11 Richard Whitney former president of the New York Stock Exchange faces a first degree larceny indictment for taking 105000 from a family trust fund. A federal grand jury probe and state inquiries loom as District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey pursued charges while Whitney was booked and bail was discussed.
In Moscow March 11 the prosecutor Vishinsky demanded execution for 19 of 21 defendants in the Yagoda era purge trial. Only Christian Rakovsky and A. Bessanoff were spared with calls for 25 years. Yagoda and others were urged for death.

Leaksville March 11. Reuben Bennett held in Wentworth jail on murder charge after the fatal shooting of Spray policeman L R Clark. Sheriff L M Sheffield said Clark was killed when serving a warrant for assaulting Bennett's wife. Three other officers arrested Bennett as he opened his door.
Raleigh March 11 Another study was made today of circumstances surrounding the electrocution of Philip E Winslow a North Carolina State College sophomore Hoover Taft Greenville lawyer said the youths father J E Winslow of Greenville believed there were several circumstances of young Philips death not explained satisfactorily Coroner L M Waring held Wednesday that the student died while performing a daring stunt Young Winslow was found at the base of a pole carrying high tension wires.
Officials announced a $15,000 addition to the Hoover Hosiery mill in Concord will be finished within a month. The expansion will create 30 additional jobs, increasing employment at the plant.
The House passed the tax bill and sent it to the Senate after rejecting a proposed 1B surtax on family owned and closely held corporations. Roll call 233 to 153. liquor tax kept at 25 cents per gallon with a 290 to 96 vote against raising it to 2.25. Republicans and some Democrats opposed the surtax, saying it would hit legitimate firms.
Editor Jonathan Daniels of the News and Observer urged Duke law students to avoid seeking excess publicity. He warned that in small cities one shyster may generate more news than three diligent attorneys, shaping public impression of lawyers.
