The Guilford county Young Republican club plans its annual meeting in Greensboro on Monday night. State Board of Agriculture backs the 1988 Farm Act unanimously and urges farmers to vote on it at Saturday’s referendum, calling it the most important election for farmers in years.
In HENDAYE FRANCE on March 10, insurgent armies smashed eastern and central government lines for key gains in the civil war. Fire from the Guadarrama range echoed as Madrid defended against attacks 80 miles northwest of the besieged capital.

President Roosevelt sends a committee report to Congress calling it a comprehensive national plan for conservation and development of water resources. He urges careful study, notes the plan is regional in approach, and outlines projects in irrigation flood control navigation rural water supply wildlife beach erosion hydroelectric power and other water uses. The six year program should be adjusted yearly to fit budget recommendations and congressional action.
The United States sold more goods to all world regions and bought less in January than a year earlier. Exports reached 289.427 million dollars, up from 222.665 million, while imports fell from 240.252 million to 170.763 million.
An American Airlines plane with seven passengers and a crew of three made a forced landing near Richlands North Carolina after straying about 150 miles off course. The craft hit a wire fence, tearing down posts but causing slight damage, and all aboard were later transported to Jacksonville and Charleston for onward travel.
In Harrisburg on March 10, Lieutenant Governor Thomas Kennedy announced his bid for the Democratic nomination, directly opposing the party organization and backed by CIO head John L. Lewis. The move creates a four way field for the May 17 primary as Charles Alvin Jones, a Pittsburgh lawyer, is picked by state leaders despite Kennedy’s months of pressure.
Ickes released a letter accusing Wendell Willkie of trying to halt a $150 million Public Works Administration TVA power project in the Tennessee Valley. The dispute follows a Memphis mayor’s telegram seeking delay guidance for electric distribution systems. Ickes said the PWA would honor existing loan and grant commitments totaling $61,225,544 in loans and $38,412,408 in grants on 61 projects in 23 states unless municipalities choose to delay.
The comptroller of the currency ordered all national banks to report their condition as of March 7. The Federal Reserve Board issued a similar call to 8,818 member banks, including 6,744 national and 2,074 state banks. In Raleigh, N C, state Commissioner Gurney P Hood issued a call for condition of all state banks as of the same date.
Asheboro will mark its one year anniversary with extensive work at the city golf course. WPA workers will top soil the greens and plant Bermuda grass for the summer. The greens approaches will be improved and a practice putting green may be added. H. R. Mills remains the pro and will continue instruction classes. Several tournaments and intercity club matches are planned for spring and summer.
A piece of flour spar from a rare mine in Illinois will symbolize the state in a Masonic marker planned near Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The marker is to be constructed by the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters in North Carolina.

New Bern March 10 R M Hawkins 34 a farmer was held on a murder charge in the fatal shooting of his wife Geneva Civils Hawkins 26 near Cove City yesterday neighbors reported hearing a muffled shotgun report then found Mrs Hawkins shot through the heart at the Hawkins residence Hawkins was arrested when he returned home the couple had two children.
Sumter South Carolina March 10 General sessions court said Redine G Pittman and his wife former Travis Goodman of Florence will likely be arraigned in July on a murder charge in the March 3 shooting death of Dr EB M Davis Mayesville physician Chief W J Seale said Pittman claimed he went to the Davis residence to beat up the physician and carried a pistol advised by his wife who admitted an affair with the doctor Seale said Mrs Pittman 26 and pretty said her husband did not know of her relations with the physician before and after her marriage last year Pittman refused to sign a written confession after conferring with Troy of Lake City a personal r d
Washington, March 1 AP Chairman Dought of the ways and means committee suggested Congress might enact a second revenue bill to make up an estimated 30 to 45 million dollars reduced from the tax revision by removing a levy on closely held corporations. He said this was his own idea and not necessarily the committee’s view. Treasury officials discussed alternate revenue options with Lee Morgenthau as Coughton weighed options if the House refused a tax on closely held corporations.
New York on March 10 reports Richard Whitney admitted wrongful acts and took sole responsibility for the Whitney firm collapse. Investors await investigations by the state attorney general and SEC led by John W. Hanes. Rosenthal testified customers’ securities were delivered without notification. Whitney mortgaged his Brunt Hill estate for 990000 last September.
