Detroit reports the 1940 Chevrolet Cabriolet with a power operated top on the Special DeLuxe chassis. The system uses vacuum power for lowering and raising, with two 4.5 inch cylinders and a two way valve. Local dealer Lyles Chevrolet, 727 North Main Street, promotes the car.
In the first half of 1939 North Carolina recorded 3946 persons fled and 3058 injured on streets and highways. The last six months saw 547 killed and 4132 injured. Rural highways yielded four times as many deaths as city streets, while urban and rural accidents were roughly comparable.
De Soto 1940 models add brake drums and twelve other parts to a thirteen item list finished by Superfinish. C F Bleicher notes smoother surfaces reduce wear and extend life, with the oil film keeping the stone from cutting as parts like brake drums tappet faces and camshaft bearings gain new finish.
Pontiac Motor Division reports retail deliveries in the first 20 days of February reached 8901 cars, up 50.7 percent from the same period last year and above January’s 8234 sales. Eight zones including Washington, Charlotte, Cleveland, Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Dallas and San Francisco delivered more cars in this period than in all of February 1959. In Dedham Massachusetts Sally Reed 18 son of industrialist saved her two younger brothers Nathaniel age 9 and Howard age 12 from a blaze at the Reed home. Firefighters arrived after she woke her brothers. A earlier kitchen fire was extinguished. Damage estimated at about 20000 dollars. Fire likely caused by defective wiring. Valuable antiques and paintings damaged.
In Pineville Kentucky County Judge Ester Hopkins married a young couple and accepted eggs as payment for the ceremony. Other notes report highway safety stats showing 9.4 percent of 1939 NC fatalities due to car mechanical defects and 99 percent on good roads with nearly half on straight sections. It also notes Saturdays have the highest highway fatality rate.
Chrysler announces Sealed Beam headlamps for 1940 models featuring a single sealed unit with light source lens and reflector, replaceable as a whole. Installation needs only a screwdriver and one size fits many 1940 cars. Bright beam delivers 65 percent more light. traffic beam directs light to the right to reduce glare.
