U S Orders Troops To Pursue Villa In Punitive Expedition

President Wilson dispatches American forces not less than 5000 troops under General Funston to pursue Villa after the Columbus raid. The White House says the move is punitive not invasion, aimed at capturing Villa dead or alive while honoring Mexican sovereignty.

Christy and Warren Hearings Sought Same Day in Forsyth

Fred M. Parrish, attorney for Samuel Christy, asked Governor Craig to hold Christy’s commutation hearing on March 20, the same day as Ida Ball Warren’s. Both await execution for the 1944 murder of J. Warren. Forsyth authorities say no state order is needed to deliver them to the penitentiary, as sentences make them state prisoners. Governor’s decision hinges on custody status at hearing time.

Markey Praises Prosperity in Southern Maccabees Visit

Supreme Commander D F Markey of Detroit addressed Guilford No 25 in High Point praising southern conditions. Greensboro and Charlotte visitors joined initiations. Markey traced the order from 1892 to 360000 members and assets over 40000000. The gathering praised High Point lodge and closed with a banquet.

Ten Thousand More Miners Sought For War Front

Robert Smillie president of the Miners Federation of Great Britain says ten thousand more skilled miners will be needed on the British war front over the next year to tunnel for the saving of wines. Government will appeal to the Home Office to enlist these men as volunteers with many already engaged in the work.

Kinston on March 16 reports Claud Sues was found guilty of murder in the second degree for killing his father in law J. J. James in Onslow county during Christmas. He was sentenced to 20 years in the state prison at Jacksonville yesterday.

Casualties Reported After Border Battle In 14 Miles South

The text notes a battle 14 miles south of the border with the casual link to American forces. One corporal died whose name is not learned and Captain Geo Williams was head wound. Mexican casualties are not listed. Sixteen Americans died, eight civilians and eight soldiers.

The recorder's court this morning found John for drunkness counts. He was jailed and sobered up. Park Street students George and Brice Brackett were acquitted of damaging school property. The city council promises to repair the cracked wall around the school grounds due to its poor condition.
