My Lai Witness Claims Few Bodies Seen

Former Lt. Jeffrey LaCross testified that William Calley’s platoon likely left at most 28 bodies on the My Lai assault. An other soldier said Calley’s men brought 20 prisoners for interrogation as proceedings linked Lt. Calley to the 1968 siege. Captain Ernest Medina faced court martial for alleged killings exceeding 100.

Civitan Club hears Frye talk on club building

Civitan district co chairman Charlie Frye addressed Plank Road Civitan Club at a breakfast meeting. Frye, one of two in the U S to win Civitan International’s Distinguished Club Presidents Award for 1969 70, urged competent officers and open communication. The club’s Splinters newsletter was highlighted as effective, with plans for an Outstanding Citizen Award on May 7 at Top of the Mart. Project Tune-In aims to train about 100 youths next year with Aubry Strother and Dan Hackney offering details.

Phone Hike Protested By Officials

RALEIGH AP The attorney general's office will oppose Southern Bell's bid to raise North Carolina rates by 23.1 million dollars a year. Deputy AG Jean Benoy said the public deserves a fair contested hearing on a regulated monopoly. The Utilities Commission allowed the AG's office to represent the public in hearings slated for late May. Southern Bell sought permission last November to raise rates for 600000 homes and 150000 business subscribers, with higher monthly bills and changes to several charges.
