Voters in High Point faced a special election to authorize $50,000 in street improvement bonds. By early afternoon about 228 of 828 registered voters had cast ballots, with 98 against and a lead of roughly 3 to 1 for bonds as rain eased and turnout was expected to rise. City Manager Lyon urged a full, educated vote as polls remained open until sunset.
Representative Robert N. Page of North Carolina announces he will not seek re election citing disagreement with the President on the submarine controversy He says the President shifted responsibility to Congress and he will support a warning resolution if it comes up but would table McLemore if it is the only measure he opposes His decision comes after long deliberation and involves conscience and duty to his constituents
Seventh District congressman Robert Newton Page announced he will not seek renomination or re election. He cited the President’s diplomatic prerogative over waring ships and stated Congress cannot effectively negotiate such matters. He urged Democratic voters to consider the crisis as the nation faces European tensions.
The House backed the administration 256 to 160 in a preliminary vote on the armed ship warning resolution. Debate focused on tabling the McLemore resolution as President Wilson seeks to show foreign nations the dissension does not reflect Congress. Speaker Clark presided as rules were debated and a close split among Democrats and Republicans formed around the warning measure and strategic support for the President.
Local rains arrive tonight with cooler temperatures inland. Wednesday brings partial cloudiness and slightly colder conditions in the eastern region. Winds shift to moderate to fresh west to northwesterly directions.
German troops push toward Verdun from the west along the Meuse and near the fortress. They seize Forges nine miles northwest of Verdun and claim gains along the Reyneville area with artillery heavy and villagers reported captured. An Australian brigade is said to be fighting at Verdun as the line shifts east of the river.
K A Bencini agrees with Chief Ingram and State Commissioner Young to remove eye sores on High Street and erect a brick modern block. The plan includes replacing the Beneini row between Hamilton and Rankin with first class structures and tearing down frame buildings near the Express office and Bellevue. Bencini to begin soon and aim to complete within two years.
Archibald Johnson editor of Charity and Children Thomasville will speak before the Community Teachers Training School for Sunday School Workers in the auditorium at 7 45 tonight. The talk on Efficiency in Sunday School Teaching follows talks by Judge Gilbert Stephenson and J Walter Long. Public invitation extended. Johnson regarded as a speaker with valuable insight.
A dispatch from Vlie land North Holland reports a group of 25 German warships observed in the North Sea on Monday. The vessels approached from the northeast and then disappeared to the north.
Raleigh March 7 four striking looking men are held on pickpocket charges after being captured at a train crowd by plainclothes officers led by Chief Koonce. The suspects travel under various aliases including William Mixon, E T McNeelis, Harry Sammond, and Will Dory, with ties to Boston and Revere Mass. The men face investigation in Raleigh Greensboro and Fayetteville with heavy bonds to be set.
Morganton March 7 A fight at Brindletown eight miles southwest of Morganton Sunday afternoon ended with John Tate Epley of Brindletown stabbed in the side by Bob Lane s 16 year old son after a heated exchange over a remark. Epley was taken to a Statesville hospital with a serious wound. doctors said he had a chance of recovery. Lane and his son were released on 1666 bond.
