American troops on the western front repulsed German attacks near Chemin des Dames and northwest of Toul. US gunners destroyed gas shell batteries, while air-assisted shelling killed six and wounded 80 enemy personnel. Five French soldiers were wounded, no American casualties reported.

Washington officials report the American merchant marine expanded by 399 sea going vessels in six months ending March 1, mostly ships built in the United States or taken from foreign use. Some were interned German ships, while large armed steamers like the Vaterland are excluded. Over 1,000,000 tons of shipping added in 117 months.
Patrolmen Mungo and Allen are assigned to sanitary work through summer. Mungo covers the city north of the Southern Railway, Allen the southern part. The two are tasked with an intensified effort to keep the city cleaner during the upcoming campaign.

The Russian council of People’s Commissaires has decided to return to Petrograd, an official statement says. The removal of elements of the population valueless in the defense of the capital is being continued.
Reports from Petrograd say Bolshevik commissionaires remain at the Smolny Institute while the government shifts military activities to a camp outside Petrograd. Dispatches indicate no removal of the commissionaires from their headquarters.
On March 1 Asheville police turned Willie Williams a 16 year old Black youth over to county authorities charged with attempted criminal incident involving a young white woman last December 26 near the city. The girl identified him as her assailant and he faces trial in Buncombe County Superior Court Monday. A $1000 reward funded by city county and citizens was offered for capture and conviction.
Mrs Martha Guyer aged 89 years died last night at the home of her son W W Guyer a mile and a half north of the city. widow of Solomon N Guyer she was well liked and widely known. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 pm at the son's home by Rev Suits. Interment will follow at Spring Hill. Two sons and two daughters survive the immediate family.
Paris reports Count Nesselrode a Russian noble who gave his remaining property to peasants before exile in 1905 argues the gap between Russia and Western Europe stems from French and allied neglect to cultivate Russian ties. He cites 35,000 Russian students in German universities and says the Entente’s stance harms Russia while he clings to faith in a sane revolutionary outcome.

Christiana March 1 German policy limits Norwegian exports to Germany. Norwegian ships must carry full provisions for round trips and may only receive small quantities of Norwegian goods in exceptional cases. German firms run some Norwegian factories and fishing operations for export to Germany. Norway remains dependent on Germany for steel iron and the import of kainite used for fertilizer.
Washington March 11 President Wilson would be empowered to commandeer lumber or timber for the army navy or shipping board under a bill favorably reported by the senate military committee. The measure targets shortages in shipbuilding timber and spruce for aircraft and would allow delegation of authority to a designated department or agency.
Funeral services for Lillian Williams Ferguson were held at Deep River Friends Church with Rev. Leslie H. Barrett officiating. Born March 16, 1884, she married James Ferguson February 14, 1906, and left two children Spurgeon and Josephine along with her husband, parents, three sisters, two brothers, and extended family. She joined the Deep River Friends, supported Philothea and Sunday school, and was remembered as a devoted wife and mother by many friends.
High Point merchants announce a new policy requiring payment within 10 days of due date for all accounts to continue credit. The rule allows extensions and is aimed at securing cash flow after near cash business shifts postwar. customers will be notified in coming weeks as merchants explain the plan and seek cooperation.
Armist de Rivaud an Austrian citizen was taken into custody by U S Marshal J C Lyon after attempting to enlist in the army. He says he was a second lieutenant in Austria and came to this country in 1912. He tried to join Plattsburg camp, then went to Canada, later joined a traveling show orchestra now at Camp Sevier. He claims pressure from taunts and a wish to aid his adopted country prompted his enlistment attempt.
An Atlantic port report states the Manhattan freight steamer of 8004 tons gross was torpedoed and sunk while in convoy near an American merchant ship. The Tiberia of 4480 tons gross belonging to Anchor Line was sunk by a German submarine around February 27 while en route to this port.
A Fayetteville man with long Episcopal church ties arrives at Camp Sevier as a special writer attached to the YMCA. He will stay at the new headquarter camp location and contribute to the camp work with his Brotherhood of St. Andrew experience.
