Washington move shows administration seeks backing in armed merchantman dispute as Wilson meets with Senate and House leaders. Conference in progress to decide action while Duncan Butler factions clash at Raleigh convention with Hughes stance and possible compromise candidates.
Postmaster Farriss announces a modified rule permitting patrons to specify how mail is delivered by box or carrier and up to what hour. Patrons may mix carrier delivery and box delivery as they prefer, with no removal from boxes after carrier delivery. Complaints should be directed to the postmaster for resolution.
Last night a blaze swept the Rankin Coffin and Casket Company in High Point destroying the machinery rooms engine room and a dry kiln with about 75 000 feet of lumber. Loss estimated at 26 000 with 4 500 insurance. About 50 workers displaced as Captain Rankin plans immediate rebuilding. Fire started around 845 pm and burned until early morning with three fire companies on scene.

The Associated Press reports in Washington on March 1 that a House bill introduces promotion of higher rank officers by selection rather than seniority and envisions a 50 percent increase in the number of officers.
Stanley G Rose, government expert on foreign trade and exports, will address the Manufacturers' club Friday afternoon in High Point. He will discuss entering foreign trade, with emphasis on opportunities in South America, and is expected to speak after arriving on No 26.
